Man wanted in fatal collision case arrested in Benoni CBD

Police thanked the community for their assistance in making the arrest.

Christo Nieman, who was wanted in connection with a fatal road accident which occurred at the corner of Evans and Benoni roads, Benoni Agricultural Holdings in 2010, was arrested on July 23.

Nieman was arrested on Cranbourne Street, Benoni CBD, by investigating officer Det WO Kenneth Ntuli after receiving a tip-off from community members.

According to police reports, there was a collision between the Isuzu bakkie and a Fiat Palio sedan on October 29, 2010, at about 11.10pm.

The driver of the Fiat Palio sedan sustained injuries and was transported to hospital for further treatment.

The 40-year-old driver of the bakkie was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and culpable homicide.

The driver of the other vehicle succumbed to his injuries on December 14, 2010.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said Nieman made an appearance in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court shortly after the incident and he was granted bail.

“When Nieman was supposed to make his second appearance in court, he never showed up,” said Sekele.

“Summonses were issued for him to appear in court and now a warrant for his arrest was also issued.”

Sekele thanked the community for their assistance in making the arrest.
