Be part of the big Homestead clean-up for Mandela Day

The team is calling on businesses, nature and running clubs, schools and residents to make this one of their Mandela Day activities.

On Friday July 19 the Litter Bugs Clean-Up Crew, a group of volunteers that meets monthly to clean up parks and pavements of Farrarmere, will be hosting a Big Homestead Clean-Up in honour of Mandela Day.

“Many of us make use of Homestead Dam, whether it’s to walk our dogs, get out and about with our children, run on parkrun on Saturday mornings or enjoy a lazy Sunday afternoon picnic,” explained Samantha Choles, co-founder of the Litter Bugs who also works with RecyclePaperZA, the paper recycling association of South Africa.

“Sadly, despite the bins provided, it is littered with bottles and takeaway packaging.

“The dam is also riddled with rubbish which is either thrown or blown in the water, or washed downstream from streams that feed into it.

“One of our Litter Bug volunteers sent us a photo of the dam, and we knew we had to do something.”

All you need is a pair of gloves, and your own refreshments.

“We will provide the bags, courtesy of Clean-Up SA, an initiative that is supported by Plastics SA and RecyclePaperZA, along with a number of organisations.

The clean-up will commence at 2.30pm and finish at 4pm.

The meeting point for the initiative is at the bottom of Coleridge Road, on Wilge Road.

“The St Dunstans College Rowing Club will help us clean up the litter in the water by way of motor boats, and we are also thrilled that Mpact Recycling, who will be sponsoring 30 pairs of gloves, as well as representatives from Miss Earth will be at the event.”
