Lions inducts presidents

Club awards and certificates of appreciation were given to members, and the City Times received one too.

The Lions Club of Benoni van Rhyn and Benoryn Branch Club inducted their new presidents for 2019/2020 lionistic year on July 7 at a lodge in Boksburg.

Vivien Hasset was re-elected as president of Benoni van Rhyn Lion Club, while Sandra van Jaarsveld was elected as president of Benoryn Branch Club.

The lunch was attended by fellow Lions and guests witnessed the induction of the presidents.

Reports on activities carried out during the past year were done by Vivien and outgoing president Lesley Young, which included:

• Handing out first-aid kits to Chief Albert Luthuli Primary School

• The Benoryn book sale

• Donkey Derby

• Diabetes screening

• Sponsoring 12 children to go on an educational camp in Pretoria.

• The collection and donation of sanitary towels to Barcelona informal settlement.

• The shoe box initiative

• The collection of soft plastic to make eco-bricks.

Their greatest accomplishment according to Vivien is the setting up of a media centre at Chief Albert Luthuli Primary School.

The induction came to an emotional peak when Vivien presented three unsuspecting members – Dalene Naude, Jarrod Hasset and Merle – with the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for outstanding humanitarian services to the community.

The award holds international recognition; Jarrod called for his wife to stand next to him after receiving the award and said it would not be possible without her.

An emotional Merle said she does not deserve this award, but is grateful to have received it.

Service awards were also given to Lions Jackie Prior, Merle Botes and Jill Walden while Corinne Ryle was welcomed as a new member of the Benoni van Rhyn Lions Club.

Vivien concluded by saying: “There is always a need, we just have to listen.”

The Lions are looking forward to their golf day in October, the spring dance and, of course, the Lions Christmas cakes.
