1st Benoni Sea Scouts celebrate 110 years

The 1st Benoni Sea Scouts is looking to share many more birthdays with new young scouters who want to join the organisation.

The 1st Benoni Sea Scout group recently celebrated their 110th birthday around a campfire attended by former scouters of the troop, scouters from the district and region, rovers of 1st Benoni, with the scouters, committee and parents.

Group scouter Leon Clulee said: “It is an achievement for any organisation to reach 110. We can truly say that this is due to the continued hard work and special efforts of the committee and scouters over the many years of its existence.”

The Sea Scouts are based in a safe environment situated next to Arrowe Park on Homestead Dam in Benoni, giving them easy access to open spaces and waterfronts.

The scouts currently run with 25 invested cubs, 40 scouts, eight rovers and 11 adult leaders making Friday evenings busy and exciting.

The campfire celebration included old and new songs, chants, skits, tricks, vespers and campfire blankets.

Former troop scouter Carl Nitzche presented Pieter Searle with his Wood badge.

During the colour party they ceremoniously retired their second troop flag and introduced their third flag in 110 years. The orginal first and second flag will be mounted in the hall for posterity.

After the campfire, celebrations continued in the hall with a birthday cake, 110 cupcakes, hot chocolate and photo displays from past activities.
