Metro explains waiting process for council flats

The Ekurhuleni metro provided the following information regarding the process and standard waiting period to apply for rental of council-owned stock.

Who can apply to live in council flats?

• The applicant must be over the age of 60 years.

• Be South African citizens and Ekurhuleni residents, unless exceptional circumstances prevail, which circumstances must be considered on merit.

• Be self-caring. In this case the elderly persons must be able to attend to themselves.

• Accommodation is reserved for the aged only and no children is allowed to reside permanently with tenant.

Requirements for family accommodation excluding hostels

• A joint monthly income of not less than three-month rental.

• Applicant must submit certified statements of all income.

• No bad debt owing for any local authority.

• Applicant must be over 18 years and be a citizen of the Republic of South Africa.

• Applicant must not be an owner or joint owner of any fixed property or be a member of a company that owns residential property.

How can a person apply for a flat?

By filling in the application form and attaching all required documents.

What is the procedure after applying?

An application must be renewed after 12 months by the applicant.

What is the turnaround time from applying to being granted a lease to live in a council-owned flat?

• For a single applicant it is two to three years and for married couples it is a year or two years.

• This all depends on the availability of the vacant unit and the position of the applicant in the waiting list.

Can the applicant move into the flat immediately after signing the lease?

Yes.

How many council-owned flats are there in Benoni specifically?

The Ekurhuleni metro has two pensioners’ flats in Benoni which is Pauline Davis Court and Deneys Conradie Residentia and houses and flats in Farrarmere Gardens.
