UPDATE: Skeletal remains found in house in Mackenzie Park

The neighbour said he contacted the police at the end of June and they managed to gain access to the property on July 3.

An inquest docket has been opened at the Benoni Police Station after skeletal remains were found in a house in Mackenzie Park on July 3.

A neighbour spoke to the City Times on July 1 regarding her concerns because she hadn’t seen the occupant of the house for almost two years.

According to the neighbours, they had made contact with the police over the years, but due to the house being a private property, police could not enter it without the owner’s consent.

The neighbour then resorted to finding a photograph, which she said was published in the City Times around 2011, with the hope to find the name of the resident’s spouse as it was a wedding photo.

The City Times then put her in contact with a SAPS officer, whom she spoke to on July 2, who said they would investigate.

The matter was escalated on July 3 after another neighbour noticed a broken window in the abandoned house.

Upon investigation, Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said skeletal remains were found in the house.

According to a resident who would like to remain anonymous, the person who resides at the house was a traditional healer and several vehicles were seen on the premises on a daily basis.

He added that about two years ago there were no more vehicles seen at the house.

“The resident was well known, so we all became suspicious when we stopped seeing the resident.”

Police could not confirm the identity of the skeletal remains, but investigation into the identity and cause of death continues.
