Rotary Benoni Van Ryn inducts new presidents

Rotarians came out in their numbers and dressed for the occasion to welcome their new president for their Rotary and Rotary Anns.

The Rotary Club Benoni Van Ryn hosted the induction of its 48th president on June 20 at a Boksburg restaurant.

Former Rotary Anns president Judy Bath highlighted the club’s achievements, which included:

• Donating blankets to various SPCAs and micro-chips to Paws R Us.

• Donated R6 000 to the tea station.

• Winter comfort where they donated scarfs, socks and fingerless gloves.

• Tea, goody bags and toiletries were given to the Salvation Army.

• They assisted with Meals on Wheels during the festive season.

• R3 500 was donated to the Rotary Foundation.

• R14 000 was raised in joint book sales.

• R50 000 was raised at the beautiful gardens of Benoni, which has been going for 21 years.

In conclusion, she also thanked her husband, Robin Bath, for being her inspiration.

She handed over her badge to the newly elected president of the Rotary Anns, Shelly Bent.

Robin Bath, former Rotary president, said they are the fun club and he believes the club is comfortably formed and shared the club’s achievements, which included:

• The introduction of Carols by Candlelight, where toys and donations were collected and money raised was used to sponsor their Meals on Wheels programme during the festive season. Eight hundred and sixty meals were delivered, which cost R10 500, and R5 000 was donated from the Anns.

• Benoni SAPS victim’s assistance with toys and carpet, 30 victims were given care packs, which included pepper spray.

• Surgical instruments were donated to Dr Agnes from OR Tambo Memorial Hospital who gives free cataract operations.

Newly elected president Charmaine Cole-Niven said she would like to propose a theme of diversity with the permission of her club.

Her goal is to collaborate with all East Rand clubs and also attend other clubs’ events.

Hoping to contribute towards larger projects, she concluded by saying: “We are proud Rotarians, we uplift people’s spirits.”
