Liberty Life donates 410 school shoes in Daveyton

The learners thanked Liberty Life with songs and poetry.

Liberty Life brought smiles to 314 learners at Mayfield Primary School in Daveyton when they donated new school shoes to them recently.

The company also donated 91 pairs of school shoes to the learners of Kuzimisela Primary School on the same day.

Mayfield Primary principal Phephi Vilakazi welcomed the guests from various organisations, parents and the children.

Vilakazi gave a brief background of the school.

She said the school was officially opened on January 7, with 970 learners, 26 teachers, 28 classrooms, two science lab centres and one multipurpose centre.

“The school is in the middle of a disadvantaged community and it services learners whose parents are unemployed,” said Vilakazi.

“So, Liberty Life, we thank you for identifying this school. We have learners who walk from as far as Bapsfontein informal settlement and those learners are really in need.”

Vilakazi said their school might look beautiful, but their children are really struggling and anyone who would like to sponsor them is welcome.

Liberty Life representative Walter Mtyali said this was part of their Corporate Social Investment (CSI) project which allows them to give back to the community and also to identify what the community needs.

“And when we looked at the community, we identified this school as most of the learners are from a disadvantaged background,” said Mtyali.

A total of 410 school shoes were donated to the learners of Kuzimisela and Mayfield primary schools on June 11. Liberty Life representative Walter Mtyali (back) is photographed with Samkelo Mahlangu (6) and Keabetswe Molotsi (7) from Mayfield Primary School.

“We saw the need to donate school shoes as most of the children walk and for some it is very hard to get a pair of school shoes.”

Mtyali said this might not look like a big gesture, but to these children having a proper pair of shoes is very important.

“Let us take care of our children’s needs as they are our future leaders,” he said.

Zanele Chili, head of department (HOD) for the foundation phase said it is the teachers and the community’s responsibility to give learners an opportunity to be successful in the classroom by providing them with all the support they need.

“By doing that, we will build future leaders who will in return build a better country for the next generation,” said Chili.

“We thank Liberty Life for uplifting our community.”

Grade One learner Keabetswe Molotsi said he was grateful for his new shoes as the ones he had previously were torn apart underneath.

He said he will love and cherish his shoes.
