Illegal mining equipment removed by EMPD

All the confiscated equipment was booked in at Benoni Police Station

Several EMPD units joined forces recently to confiscate illegal mining equipment and explosives in Benoni.

“The EMPD Specialised Services comprising of the Equestrian, K9, SWAT, Public Order Policing and Drug Enforcement units jointly swooped in on the illegal mining area along New Modder Road and next to the N12 freeway at the Putfontein turn-off in pursuit of illegal miners,” said Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, the EMPD spokesperson.

“Although the illegal miners disappeared into the shafts, numerous items of equipment used by them to mine illegally were seized by the metro police and their illegally erected tents and structures in which they work were demolished.”

Kgasago added that the three-hour operation yielded seven explosive sticks with seven detonator cords, 14 phendukas, five crusher pots, eight steel rods, two five-pound hammers, two spades, two chisels and one bottle containing mercury.
