Members of Benoni van Rhyn Lions Club donated about 400 library books to Sizuzile Primary School, in Tsakane.

The books came with bookshelves and stands.

Acting principal Zola Nongogo said they established a relationship with the club after their visit last year and were asked to write down a list of things the school needed.

“We told them our learners needed reading books,” said Nongogo.

Sizuzile Primary is one of the underprivileged schools in the area; the books will have a positive impact on the learners.

“They came at the right time. We truly needed those books and couldn’t afford them as our budget is limited.”

The acting principal further explained the learners will now have an opportunity to have access to reading material as this was previously not possible because the local library is situated far away from them.

Grade Seven learner Nokuthula Radebe (13) said: “These books represent a winning nation for me because without books we cannot go very far.

“I encourage my peers to start reading, writing and become involved.”

She says one of her favorite books is My Sister is Missing by Carissa Ann Lynch.

Thandolwethu Nhlapo (11), a Grade Six learner, expressed her gratitude and says she is very excited and cannot wait to become a bookworm.

“Reading is very important as we learn new words, how to spell and it is fun.

“I am very happy and would like to say thank you to the Lions Club,” said Thandolwethu.

The club would like to thank the public for responding to their recent request for donation of children’s books.
