Children’s rights highlighted at pre-school in CBD for Child Protection Week

Stranger danger, inappropriate sexual contact and road safety were among the issues highlighted on the day.

Children at Godswill Pre-School and Day Care Centre in Benoni CBD were paid a visit by Benoni SAPS and EMPD members recently in light of Child Protection Week (June 2 to 9).

The local authorities, coupled with members from the iThemba Rape and Trauma Support Centre, met with the children to highlight the importance of children’s rights.

Kgothatso Koopedi, women directorate at the mayor’s office, was also present and indicated creating a safe environment for children to grow in is of paramount importance.

“We want to empower children and make them well aware of their rights and responsibilities.

“We are also making the children aware of all stakeholders involved and who they should contact when something happens to them.”

Rose Maja from Ithemba confirmed it was the centre’s third visit to a pre-school in Benoni in the week.

“We are raising awareness and informing children of their rights and how to protect themselves,” she said.

Maja also advised parents to keep their children safe by:

• Not allowing their children to walk alone;

• Always knowing where their children are; and

• Keeping a watchful eye on children when visiting the mall or busy places as children can get lost easily and human trafficking is becoming a big problem.
