Beware of fake money scamsters -Benoni SAPS

This comes after a number of victims have come forward to hand over a wad of this fake cash to police.

Benoni police are warning residents of a scam involving fake cash and armed robbery.

This comes after a number of victims have come forward to hand over a wad of this fake cash to police.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said the suspects mostly target people who are withdrawing a large sum of money at the bank or ATM.

“The modus operandi of the scamsters is to throw a fake wad of cash on the ground for an unsuspecting victim to pick up.

“They then accost the victim and tell them they also want a share of the money,” said Sekele.

“Once the victim and the scamster walk away to go share the fake money, the scamster threatens the victim with a firearm and robs them.”

The fake wad of cash, unrolled, that scammers throw on the floor.

Sekele said the fake wad of money is, in fact, only one fake notes rolled around paper, making it appear like a lot of money.

“We urge residents to be alert, especially at ATMs, and never accept help from or engage with strangers, no matter what their story,” she said.
