SPCA applauds sentence for animal abuser

Bodasing said this conviction is a victory for the Benoni SPCA after two years of pursuing justice.

Etwatwa resident Gift Mtshali (36) was recently found guilty for contravening the Animals Protection Act no 71 of 1962 and sentenced to a R6 000 fine or 12 months’ imprisonment in the Daveyton Magistrate’s Court on May 31.

Mtshali was arrested in Etwatwa in November 2017 for chaining and confiding his animals in dirty and parasitic conditions causing them unnecessary suffering and was charged by former Benoni SPCA inspector, Shiven Bodasing.

“I am ecstatic at the sentence handed down.

“Magistrate Lekgau was unequivocally clear in her view of the crimes committed and stated that it is unacceptable behaviour in respect of the ill treatment of the animals.

“I am eternally grateful that the court has been mindful in light of the recent dog-fighting convictions in the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court, and that such penalties motivated the sentencing of this particular matter.

“It is essential that justice is served and in a manner that will serve to deter others from committing the same crimes,” Bodasing said.
