Benoni SAPS shares crime trends in the area

Remember to activate your alarm system. If you do not have an alarm system, have one installed if you can. Remember not to inform a lot of people that you are going away. Instead, tell someone you trust and also inform them when they should expect you back.

The Benoni SAPS has shared some of the crime trends to help you take the necessary precaution.

The Benoni SAPS spokesperson, Capt Nomsa Sekele, shared some of the crime trends in the four sectors of Benoni.

In Sector One, which includes Rynfield and Morehill, housebreakings and smash and grabs are the main contributors of crime in the area.

Sekele said housebreakings occur during the day and night when people are at work, at times when windows are sometimes left open and valuables are visible enough for criminals to strike.

“A suspect was recently arrested for smash-and-grab on Snake Road. Through the investigation, it was revealed that he was from Mamelodi, Pretoria, which shows that some of our suspects are operating from out of the borders of Benoni. said Sekele.

“We have increased the vehicles patrolling around the area,” said Sekele

Sector Two, which covers Farrarmere, Northmead, Airfield, Goedeburg, Alfenpark, Aeropark and Northvila areas, common crimes committed are theft out and from motor vehicles, which are mostly committed by vagrant since their influx around the area is estimated to be 85 per cent.

“Residential robberies are also problematic, suspects target houses and inform domestic workers and or gardeners that they are sent by owners to come and fix or deliver something in the house,” said Sekele.

“Domestic workers need to contact their employers and inform them of unknown people wanting to gain entry and confirm their claims with their employers before granting them access.”

In Sector Three, the Benoni Agricultural Holdings and Brentwood Park, theft from motor vehicles where criminals target wheels and mags, theft of motorcycles, quad bikes and gardening tools/equipment found lying in the yards are problematic crimes in the area.

These incidents happen mostly during the night or when nobody is at home.

Sector Four and Five which include the Benoni CBD, Western Extension and Lakefield, the primary crimes committed are smash-and-grab, theft out and from motor vehicles and residential robberies.

The spokesperson urges residents to report all crime incidents, no matter how small they may be.

To report a crime, visit the station at 117 Harpur Avenue, Western Extension, or call crimestop on 08600 10111.
