Metro employee arrested for fraud

A Human Resources employee of Ekurhuleni metro was arrested at his Benoni home on the morning of May 24 in connection with alleged job scams.

A case of fraud was registered against the 39-year-old suspect at the Boksburg Police Station and he is expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon, as a complainant had deposited money at a bank in Boksburg implying that the crime was committed there.

An in-depth investigation was conducted after complaints were received about the suspect’s alleged illegal selling of jobs advertised by the metro.

Investigations revealed that the stolen identity document of an Eastern Cape man was used to open a bank account into which monies for selling jobs were paid in. The Ekhuruleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) Security and Loss Control Unit travelled to the Eastern Cape where the man whose identity document was used was cleared after submitting solemn statements that he was not involved as he visited Ekurhuleni in 2014 and that was when his identity document was stolen.

With the assistance of the Regulation of Interception of Communications Act, the cellphone number reflected on the job advertisements scamming unsuspecting desperate job-seekers.

The EMPD Security and Loss Control Unit members uncovered 10 cellphones, several MTN, Telkom and Cell C sim cards and a laptop at his place.

The Democratic Alliance in Ekurhuleni congratulated the EMPD Security and Loss Control Investigation Unit on the arrest of the Ekurhuleni official.

Councillor Jaco Terblanche, the DA Member of the Community Safety Oversight Committee, said they hope that the arrest is not a once-off event, but rather the start of a trend that sees a clampdown on corrupt officials operating within the metro and he urged the MMC for Community Safety, Councillor Vivienne Chauke, to allow the EMPD unit to continue their fight against corruption in Ekurhuleni.

He also requested that Chauke begin investigations into alleged corruption within the Licensing Department.

“The DA is encouraged by these developments and call on the EMPD to continue their corruption crackdown in the interests of creating a better Ekurhuleni for our residents.

“It is important that EMPD officers act professionally so when there are allegations of corruption, investigations should be conducted accordingly. Furthermore, when officers are found guilty they should be served with the harshest punishment as a deterrent for them to get involved in crime and corruption,” he said.
