Metro responds to DA’s call for maintenance on Middle Lake

“There is no specified time maintenance that should take place at/on the dams in Benoni as the maintenance actions do not occur periodically at a given time,”

Following a visit to the Middle Lake spillway by DA MP Mike Waters, the Ekurhuleni metro has since responded to the MP’s allegations over a lack of maintenance at the spillway.

The metro’s Nhlanhla Cebekhulu (divisional head for communication and media relations) responded with the following:

“There is no specified time maintenance that should take place at/on the dams in Benoni as the maintenance actions do not occur periodically at a given time,” said Cebekhulu when asked about how often maintenance should take place.

“Intensive capital remedial work was done last during 2003-2004.”

According to Cebekhulu, the following remedial work was done:

• A vertical cut-off concrete beam was installed on full supply level to prevent seepage through the earth-fill dam.

• Cracks and all joints were sealed.

• All cavities were grouted.

“The appointed dam safety professional prepared operations and maintenance manuals for all category two dams in the metro, which includes the Middle Lake, and submitted them to the National Department of Water and Sanitation.

“Ekurhuleni appointed dam safety officers to undertake routine inspections as per the operations and maintenance manuals and they were trained by the appointed dam safety professional on what to look out for during the said inspections and also on the maintenance actions to be taken.”
