Correction: Library services are affected by computer licence issue.

The City Times will endeavour to get further comment from the metro on various issues at the Benoni Library.

Friends of the Library committee member Ann Smith was misquoted in an article on page 5 of this week’s City Times, “Bookworms encouraged to keep using Benoni Library”.

The article states that Smith said the recent expiration of the system licence and plans from the Ekurhuleni metro to replace it will not affect any of the services.

“I, in fact, said the opposite – the services are affected by the expiration of the system licence; in fact the computers have not been working at Benoni Library for about the past five years.

“I dispute the comment made by Ekurhuleni metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe too.”

Gadebe is quoted as saying users can still access the latest material through the e-book system.

“There is also internet connectivity which enables users to use the library computers for other internet-based functions, such as job applications, research and registrations,” Gadebe said.

“This is totally untrue – there is no internet and the computers are not working – for years now,” Smith said.
