Mother mourns death of son who was killed for a cigarette in Daveyton

“I have cried a lot and I still can’t believe that my son is gone,” she said.

Lucky Mahlangu (25), a well-known singer and photographer in the community, died after being shot on May 13 in Mayfield, Daveyton.

Lucky and his friend Thandokuhle Mazwanyane (20) were walking to a tavern to buy cigarettes when two armed men approached them.

It is alleged the suspects asked for a cigarette and the two friends responded that they didn’t have any.

One of the suspects drew a gun and cocked it.

“We ran away after he cocked his gun. Then he chased us while firing shots,” said Mazwanyane.

Mazwanyane said he knew they had been shot when Lucky collapsed just one street away from his home.

A few members of the community who came out of their houses to see what was happening saw the suspects fleeing the scene.

“I ran to Lucky’s house and called his brother and told him what happened,” said Mazwanyane.

The younger brother, Nkosinathi, said that when he reached the spot, his brother was lying lifeless in a pool of blood.

A member of the community offered to transport Lucky to the nearest hospital, where he was declared dead.
