Splash some colour into 2020

There will be seven categories, divided into the following age groups: primary school (6-7, 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13 years old) and high school (14-15, 16-17 and 18-19 years old).

Primary and high school learners, what if we told you that you can let your imagination run wild on paper and could possibly win some cash by doing so?

If that caught your attention, then you need to pop by at the Benoni City Times office in Northmead Square or email sharne@mallspacemanagement.co.za to get your entry form for the School Art Competition for all artists from the ages of six to 18.

All you have to do is create an art piece on the A3 entry page provided, when collecting your entry form, that represents ‘Your South Africa 2020’.

It can be representational or abstract.

The artwork must include the Northmead Square logo and slogan as can be seen on the top of the page.

The entries will be judged by a selected panel of judges from the Benoni Art Association, the Benoni City Times and the Northmead Square management.

The top three entries of each category will be exhibited in Northmead Square from July 15 to 20, where the public will be able to vote for their winner.

Winners of each category will receive various prizes, including a cash prize to the value of R1 000 each, with two winners in the age category 17-18 who will each receive a R20 000 partial bursary from Pearson Institute of Higher Education, Bedfordview Campus, as sponsorship for 2020 enrolment.

Each winner will also be featured in the Benoni City Times.

But that is not all, sponsored by Pearson Institute and Curro Serengeti, the school which has the most entrants will also receive R3 000.

How to enter guidelines:

Each learner should be given two forms:

• Entry form with a template indicating the size of the artwork to be designed. All designs must be done on this form. If other paper is to be used, please ensure that the exact same size template is used. The artwork must be designed within the block given, not outside.

• The Northmead Square School Art Competition information sheet that includes the competition details, how to enter guidelines and artwork brief.

Competition criteria:

Follow the artwork briefing. The art piece can represent ‘Your South Africa 2020’ in whichever way. However it is required that the Northmead Square logo and slogan be incorporated in some way.

• Research: with the elections top of mind this year, find creative ways to incorporate your idea of ‘What South Africa should be in 2020’.

• The success of an artwork will be measured based on creativity, as well as the way the learner incorporates Northmead Square into the piece.

• Create a rough plan and layout before executing your final design on the entry form. The execution must be neat, accurate and attractive.

• Use of material: a suggestion that crayons, koki pens or pastels be used. If a pencil is used, it must be 2B or softer. If paint is used on the paper supplied, it will warp and crinkle.

It is therefore suggested that if an entrant wishes to use water or acrylic paint, the correct paper be purchased. Remember to measure the advert size and once completed, paste the entry in the space provided on the entry form.

• You may not paste logos or any pictures onto your advert, you must draw them freehand, copy or trace them.

• All entries must be submitted by no later than June 14.

• If the age category allocated is not adhered to, it results in a disqualification.

Once all entries have been designed, place them in a large brown envelope and drop them off at the Benoni City Times offices by June 14.

If all artwork is ready before this date, call for collection.

The entries will then be forwarded to the Benoni Art Association for judging.
