Be careful of street robberies in Daveyton

TIP: If you are out at night, stick to well-lit areas. Also, try to go out in groups and avoid using shortcuts.

After a number of street robbery cases reported in the Daveyton area, the Daveyton SAPS will intensify police visibility around the area.

Daveyton SAPS head of Vispol Lt Col Mac Mngomezulu said the culprits in those cases are usually three or two men, armed with a gun or knives to threaten the victims.

“Most of these incidents occur in the morning and in the evening when people are going to the Daveyton Train Station or from the station as they are coming back from work,” said Mngomezulu.

“The suspects then follow the victims into an isolated place and then rob them,” said Mngomezulu.

Mngomezulu said in the Daveyton area there is a lot of shebeens, pubs and taverns. Most people get robbed of their valuables when they are coming from these places.

“We urge residents not to carry their valuables such as cellphones and wallets in hand, he said.

“People must report a crime as soon as possible after it has occurred, and not leave it for the following day.”

Mngomezulu said that they need residents to report the crime immediately. This will enable police to search for the perpetrators and also increase police visibility in the area.

“There is a crime prevention team that is patrolling the area hourly and we will also conduct stop and search operations to try to curb these robberies.”

The station also supplied the following important numbers for residents within its precinct.
