Benoni EMPD Precinct will only relocate next year

In a previous article, the City Times reported that the precinct was expected to move by June 2019.

The Benoni EMPD Precinct, which is based in the Benoni CBD, which was expected to move to Northmead this year, has been set to move by June 2020.

EMPD spokesperson Chief-Supt Wilfred Kgasago said the new precinct will be located on Fifth Avenue between Fifth and Sixth streets.

“It is a long process, which includes site identification, consultants, drawing plans, approvals, building processes and so on,” Kgasago said in the previous article.

The contractor was supposed to be appointed in October last year but Kgasago said due to logistics being attended to and administrations being finalised, the contractor is yet to be appointed.

“We are also hoping for the construction to commence in July 2019, if all goes well,” he explained.

The EMPD precinct is currently situated on the corner of Victoria Avenue and Tom Jones Street.

There are only two EMPD precincts in Benoni – one in the Benoni CBD and another in Bromberg.

“The reason for the move is a strategic management decision, aimed at enhancing the services rendered by the precinct,” Kgasago said.

The new precinct station aims to provide a fully-functional service to the community of Ekurhuleni, with enforcement of municipal by-laws, crime prevention, traffic policing and council security, as the key performance areas.

Currently the precinct offers basic services, including:

• Traffic fine enquiries.

• Complaints reporting.

• Payment of fines.

• Funeral escort applications.

• Applications for marches or demonstrations.

• Accident reports

• General law enforcement, including by-laws.
