Bricklayers get expert advice at Etwatwa workshop

The aim of the workshops is to provide an enabling environment for skills development to help bricklayers to participate in the economy.

Daveyton brickmakers were in for a special treat when cement producer PPC Cement hosted a brickmaking workshop on April 3 at Thando’s Bricks and Hardware in Etwatwa.

The aim of the workshops is to provide an enabling environment for skills development to help bricklayers to participate in the economy and escape poverty.

About 20 bricklayers from around the area underwent a crash course on how to properly construct bricks using right measurements to ensure strength and stability so as to build houses that will collapse or cave in.

PPC Southern Africa managing director Njombo Lekula said to live up to their brand ethos of ‘strength beyond’, they aim to go beyond business as usual, meaning they are not just selling a product but also providing their customers with practical help that will improve their businesses.

“The key purpose of these workshops is to impart knowledge and expertise to these business people and to ensure that they get the best value out of our product and, in turn, they can produce quality bricks and blocks for their customers,” said Lekula.

“It’s all about strengthening the township economy and ensuring that we can serve the local community better.”

Lekula said the workshops were led by the PPC technical specialists who passed on the technical know-how to brickmakers.

“Then the PPC sales team took over to offer individual brickmakers support in growing and managing their businesses effectively with ongoing mentoring to complement technical expertise transferred at the workshop,” he said.
