Suspect arrested for possession of two rhino horns

It was not yet established where the suspect got the rhino horns, but investigations continue.

A suspect (34) was put behind bars and is awaiting his appearance in court following his arrest by Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) members and the Ekhuruleni Central Cluster (ECC) Task Team, facing charges of being in possession of rhino horns.

The suspect was arrested on the R21 highway on April 1 when WO Renier Dorling and WO Francois Jansen from BFS and the ECC Tactical Team followed up on a suspect who was reported to be in possession of rhino horns, looking for a buyer.

“It is alleged the suspect was followed after being picked up in a grey Toyota bakkie in Benoni next to One Sun Hotel,” said BFS spokesperson WO Grant Giblin.

“This led onto the N12 highway where backup was called and arrived in the form of a BFS vehicle.

“On the R21 highway north, underneath the Griffiths off-ramp bridge, a thorough search was conducted where the foreign national was allegedly found in possession of two rhino horns.

“The suspect was arrested immediately and the horns, weighing in excess of two kilograms with an estimated street value of around R1.7-million, was confiscated.”

The suspect will be appearing in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
