Young entrepreneur (10) raises money to support SPCA

The Benoni SPCA is still in need of donations and anyone willing to donate contact the office on 011 894 2814 or visit the Benoni SPCA at 3 Klein Street, Lakefield.

You do not have to be an adult to make a difference and Damian van Eeden (10), a Woodlands International College learner, is a good example of this.

He donated 17 bags of dog food to the Benoni SPCA on March 15. Damian raised the funds by paying for a table at a Christmas market at his school and sold Christmas goodies such as hats and decorations.

He also had a games table and made a profit of R4 700 in total, which he then used to buy the dog food.

Damian said he chose to support the SPCA because he felt that during the December period, a lot of people immigrate and do not have enough money to take their animals with them, so they surrender them to the SPCA instead.

“I bought the dog food to help the animals at the SPCA,” he said.

Vicky Finnemore, the manager of the Benoni SPCA, said this young man sets a good example for the youth of how to give back.

“For a 10-year-old to do this is a selfless and commendable act,” she said.

Following the recent confiscation of 45 dogs by the SPCA from well-known dog breeders and show judges in Benoni, Vicky said they have spent R157 000 on medical treatment, kennel costs, grooming, petrol and parasite remedies on their care.

She also mentioned how overwhelmed they recently were by an unexpected donation of R10 000 from the Grade 11 Ashton International College Debs and Squires, which will be used to pay veterninary bills.
