[WATCH] Benonian given provincial honour

According to the Mackenzie Park resident, he is the first and only Benoni resident to be elected on the board.

Community activist Reza Patel, who is the chairperson of both the Benoni Community Policing Forum (CPF) and the Ekurhuleni Central Cluster CPF, was recently elected as the public relations officer (PRO) of the Gauteng Provincial Community Police Board (GPCPB).

The new title forms part of six executive positions available at the GPCPB.

“I am truly honoured by the new position,” said Patel.

“There are a total of 147 police stations in the province the GPCPB is in partnership with.

“Under each police station, there is a minimum of six to seven sectors, which then averages out to around tens of thousands of people countrywide associated with the CPF.

“It is, therefore, a great responsibility.

“I was elected on merit and the decision was not affected by any political affiliation or ethnicity status.

“It was a unanimous decision and no one wanted to stand against me.”

He added that the Benoni CPF was placed first in the cluster in October 2018 and was ranked third at the provincial awards the following month.

“The management is good and we work well as a team.”

Benoni CPF PRO Marinda Beukes said she was thankful that Benoni is represented on a provincial scale, owing to Patel’s new engagement.

“We are very proud of him,” she said.

She also reiterated that the CPF is the only legislated body that is mandated to work with the South African Police Service.

“The mandate is in place since 1994,” she said.
