Keeping up with council

The DA is questioning Ekurhuleni regarding the slow rate of repairs and maintenance to lifts in council-owned flats across the metro.

Have your say on renaming

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni calls on residents to collectively make their voices heard regarding the proposed renaming of geographical features in the Ekurhuleni.

“It has to be made clear that failure to take part in this process would mean that residents are giving a blank cheque to the government to spend taxpayer’s money on renaming features instead of providing service delivery,” said DA shadow MMC for community service in Ekurhuleni councillor Malcolm Maifala.

According to the DA, residents are given an opportunity to stop unnecessary expenses by making written submissions to Hendrick.Boya@Ekurhuleni.gov.za or call on 011 999 3357. The closing date for comments is on March 22.

To see and inspect the proposed list of names residents can visit libraries and the Customer Care Centre in Ekurhuleni.

Lift issue elevated

Ward 29 councillor Haseena Ismail said Karachi Court and Delhi Court flats, in Actonville, are still awaiting urgent upgrades needed for the lifts as residents and particularly the elderly are forced to use the stairs due to the non-operational lifts, making it hard for emergency services to access certain flats with their equipment due to the condition of the flats.

“In August last year, we were introduced to the new contractors and promised that work would commence on the lifts, To-date, we are still awaiting results.

“The tender process was reopened in order to appoint a new contractor, the project manager has also visited the nine properties to assess the work needed.

“Residents of the flats are growing increasingly frustrated by the lack of delivery of core services, with the metro only expecting work to commence in the middle of the year,” she said.

The public can attend the monthly council meetings, which take place on March 27 (special council meeting for State of the City address), March 28, May 2, May 23 (special council meeting, budget), July 25, September 26, October 31 and November 28. All meetings are held at the Ekurhuleni Council Chamber, corner Queen and Cross streets, Germiston, and start at 10am.
