Got stamps? Join the East Rand Philatelic society

The last time the National Exhibition was held on the East Rand was in 1994 and it took place in the Benoni Town Hall.

Are you a stamp collecting fanatic?

Then why not join the East Rand Philatelic Society (ERPS), which is 100 years old this year.

To mark this milestone, the ERPS is hosting the 2019 National Exhibition at the Lakes Hotel and Conference Centre, in Benoni, from September 4 to7.

The ERPS recently held its annual general meeting (AGM) in Western Extension to elect the committee members for 2019.

President of the ERPS Jimmy Mitchell explained that philately is the collection and study of postage stamps and their use.

“ERPS is affiliated to the Philatelic Federation of South Africa, which is the umbrella body of stamp clubs in the country, and they provide key services to collectors and stamp clubs,” he said.

At the National Exhibition, stamps can be exhibited at club level or national and international level and can include modern material or postage stamps issued and used before 1940 or earlier.

The elected committee members are: Jimmy Mitchell (president), Emil Minnar (vice president), Paul Hammerton (secretary),Phidias Chrysochou, David Wigston, Charles Rogers, Tom Dooley (general committee).
