[LISTEN] Donations needed to sustain CBD feeding scheme

'The joy of serving others'

Margaret Makhubela and her team, who run a feeding scheme in the Benoni CBD, are appealing for food donations to help the cause and enable the scheme to fill bellies at least five days a week.

Located at Dynamic Health Education and Training Institution in Prince’s Avenue, the scheme feeds the homeless and underprivileged in the area from Monday to Thursday.

Margaret (back, second from right) said she was proud of the volunteer work done by her team.

Margaret estimates that around 248 people benefit from this initiative, which has been running for four years.

All contributions to the scheme are currently funded by Margaret from her personal monthly income.

“We believe in providing people with love, encouragement and dignity,” said Margaret.

A day in the life of Margaret entails waking up at 4am at her home in Klippoortjie, near Alberton, and preparing a fresh pot of food.

She then drives to the institution and, along with her team, prepares to feed the homeless food and words of encouragement after a prayer.

“We provide them with toiletries and some of them come here and bath.

“We also try to provide them with clothing and I have it dry-cleaned at a laundromat nearby that does the washing for me at a discount price.

“The aim here is to make the people feel like they deserve a good life, as after all, they are also human.”

“It is a joy to serve others and it is only by the grace of God that the scheme has been in existence for as long as it has.

“We are now appealing to the public to assist us in any way they can.

“Currently, we are seeking donations in the form of food, toiletries or clothing.”

Margaret added that the donation of a stove and a fridge (even if it is second-hand) will be welcomed by the team which will enable them to cook meals at the institution instead of transporting it from her home in Klippoortjie daily.

Further to this, Margaret says they are firm believers in second chances.

“Even if they have done wrong things they will always get a mom’s love and hugs here – but we also correct and guide them when they have gone wayward.”
