A shortage of textbooks due to an increase in enrolment of learners has resulted in the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) undergoing a procurement process to address the crisis.
This was according to GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona when questioned about the shortages of textbooks at William Hills Secondary School, in Actonville.

Learners here embarked on a peaceful protest on the premises on February 7, to highlight a number of challenges facing the school, which included staff and textbook shortages.
An anonymous source at the school confirmed that since the protest, learners are back in class and teaching has resumed as per usual, but the shortage of textbooks still remains a concern.
The following numbers of textbooks are outstanding at William Hills:
• Grade Eight: English (30), natural sciences (90), technology (90), economic management sciences (100), life orientation (60)
• Grade Nine: English (140)
• Grade Ten: Physical sciences (10), economics (40)
• Grade 11: English (10), physical sciences (10), business studies (60), economics (30), tourism (20)
• Grade 12: Mathematics (10), life sciences (10)
The first academic term finishes on Friday, March 15, having commenced on January 9.
“The issue of textbook shortages at William Hills Secondary School is being attended to by the district and head office LTSM (learning and teaching support materials),” said Mobona.
“The school was instructed to place an order to procure Grade 12 shortages utilising their LTSM balance of R 9 119.41 immediately.
“The district submitted requisitions to head office requesting assistance for procurement of other textbook shortages.”
