Salvation Army’s work now more secure

This comes after the care centre made an appeal late last year for help.

The Salvation Army Benoni has been donated a canopy for their bakkie by the Benoni-based Marven Equipment.

This comes after the care centre made an appeal late last year for help.

Antonette Grobler, assistant centre manager, explained that donations of bread and other foodstuffs were being targeted by young thieves in the CBD, who took to stealing these, crates and all, off the back of the open bakkie when it was stationary at a traffic light.

“In addition to the theft, our much-needed donations were also getting wet when it rained, and we would often lose entire donations, either to theft or damage.

“This resulted in other NGOs whom we partner with also not being able to benefit from our food donations,” Antonette said.

On behalf of the care centre, the City Times then approached Christine Geldart, managing member of Marven Equipment, which is a leader in the design and manufacture of aluminium canopies and Rollover Protection Systems in South Africa – and which is based right here in Lake Avenue, Benoni CBD.

“If anyone could come to the party on this urgent community appeal it was Marven Equipment, I felt,” said City Times editor, Lana O’Neill.

“Christine did not hesitate to start sourcing the right canopy and despite some unforeseen delays, she let me know last week that she now had a canopy for The Salvation Army.

“I was thrilled and immediately alerted Antonette and Major Jeffrey Stafford, at The Salvation Army.”

Within days, the bakkie was taken to Marven Equipment and the sturdy new canopy fitted.

“We are so excited and very grateful that Christine opened her heart and donated a canopy to us,” an emotional Antonette said.

“We can never thank her enough.

“She has helped to make a difference in the lives of many as this kind gesture enables us to better carry out our ministry and live out our motto, heart to God, hand to man.”
