The East Rand Cansa Relay for Life takes place at Boksburg Stadium from 7pm on March 8 to 7am on March 9.

It is the eighth event for the East Rand branch of the Cancer Association of SA (Cansa). The organisers are thrilled it is a back at Boksburg Stadium this time around.

Last year’s event had to be moved to PG Park, in Boksburg.

Yolandi Jacobs, the community mobiliser fund-raising developer for Cansa East Rand, urges the team to get creative and get their entries in.

“Last year we had 47 teams and 134 cancer survivors participating.

“Our aim this year is to have at least 60 teams and 200 cancer survivors present,” she said.

The 2019 theme is Relay Olympics.

Teams should create a team flag for the opening ceremony as there are amazing prizes to be won, Yolandi said.

“We also urge teams to do a pre-relay fund-raising because there are also prizes for the most funds raised,” she added.

The cost to enter a team of 10 is R1 200, which includes five parking tickets and five luminaria bags.

Yolandi elaborated on the Survivor Function, for which registration is also open.

“At the heart of the Cansa Relay for Life is the opportunity to celebrate cancer survivors, to remember those who have left us and to create awareness about cancer,” she said.

“Cancer survivors are VIP guests at the function, and we urge all survivors who would like to be there to register now.”

The Cansa Relay for Life starts with the Survivor Function, from 4.30pm for 5pm until 6.50pm.

This is followed by the official start of the relay at 7pm, which kicks off with a survivor’s lap followed by a caregivers’ lap to honour friends, family and co-workers who have provided survivors with support.

To register for the Survivor Function, contact Joelene Wiggill on 082 464 4220 or Filicia Ramalho on 082 094 0250.
