[LISTEN] Donations needed for Actonville feeding scheme

Food items collected and served are strictly vegetarian.

Members of the Benoni Shiva Temple (Shree Arulmigu Arthanareeswra) in Actonville commenced their annual feeding scheme in February and are appealing to the general public to assist with food items and other donations for the cause.

Renee Ganespersad, a member of the temple and one of the lead volunteers, said the initiative is an integral part in sustaining the community.

“We host the feeding as a soup kitchen on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays,” she explained.

“Members of the community turn up in their numbers and even bring along two-litre containers to fill with food.

“This will ensure they have food on the day and the following day.

“In this way, one day of feeding results in two days’ worth of food and ultimately means we can feed people for almost seven days a week.”

Ganespersad, formally from KwaZulu-Natal, said charity and giving were instilled in her at an early age and urges those who are able to give to do so.

“My family did feedings from as far back as I can remember, so I grew up feeling this was a duty I had to perform, which my husband and children also engage in now.

“I believe if it’s in the power of your hands to assist, you should.”

Ganespersad said whatever their members could provide to the cause was self-funded, but that they recently received a donation of food hampers from a national retailer and this has gone a long way.

“We are so grateful for the donation and they (the retailer) have been fantastic with their donation.”

Other members noted the food was not just for those in the Actonville community, but was extended to those in the broader-community sphere who are in need.
