Thirty-one bull terriers competed at the Supreme Bull Terrier Show at Belvedere School on Saturday but there could only be one winner … and that was a Beorma Midnight oil of Bellators, who was, of course, born and bred in Benoni.
Rhino, as he is known at home, is owned by Nico du Preez, Frans Olivier and Johan Warffemius (who bred him too).

“This is a breed competition; these bull terriers are judged according to the Bull Terrier Standard and are separate from those competing in obedience or agility,” said committee member of the South African Bull Terrier Club Carien Warffemius.
The qualifying dogs came from all over South Africa to compete.
Belvedere is used as a venue because of the immaculate school and grounds and that the hall is big enough to allow for the set-up of a show ring, Carien explained.
“The judging is according to the UK Bull Terrier Standard,” she said.
These standards include conformation of the dog, construction, movement, shape of the head, eye placement, correct teeth, power and substance.
“The dog with the most virtues and lack of serious faults wins,” Carien said.
This year the judges were Dave Brennan, Adri Els and Eddie Ball.
The event, which has been running since 1982, is organised annually under licence from the Kennel Union of South Africa by The South African Bull Terrier Club in conjunction with all the other bull terrier clubs, nationally.
