SPCA in need of funds to support recently confiscated dogs

Finnemore said the dog breeders’ entire inventory was confiscated, and these animals are being kept and treated at the Benoni SPCA.

The Benoni SPCA is full to capacity after they confiscated 45 dogs from a well-known show dog judge and breeder recently.

These animals cannot be put up for adoption as they are still part of a criminal case, which now requires more funds to be spent by the SPCA for the care of them.

Vicky Finnemore manager at the Benoni SPCA said these animals need to be fed for as long as they are here, they need to be groomed, dewormed and vaccinated.

Over R20 000 has already been spent on the animals brought in as the majority of them had problems which included ear infections, dental disease, ulcerated tumors, eye infections, hip dysplasia, skin infections and several were underweight.

“A case of neglect which includes unnecessary confinement and failing to render veterinary treatment will be opened,” Finnemore said.

According to Finnemore, during their first inspection, SPCA inspectors were told by the owner that there were only 15 dogs on the property, and roughly that number of healthy-looking French poodles could be seen in the garden.

However, suspicion arouse when the owner refused to let the members onto the premises, resulting in the SPCA inspectorate returning a day later with a search warrant.

“Upon entry, it was found that a further 30 dogs were being hidden inside the house, many of them needing immediate medical attention,” Finnemore said.

“French poodles, Cocker Spaniels, Maltese poodles and Cockapoos were amongst the breeds found on the property.

“Dogs were found locked in small crates inside the house and in the domestic worker’s room.”

The fate of these animals will be determined by the magistrate.

Finnemore continued to say: “I think I speak for all SPCA organisations around the country when I say that we are tired of cleaning up the mess left behind by breeders and puppy mills.

“Our SPCA alone takes in an average of 400 animals a month and this is because of uncontrolled breeding.

“We would like to say a huge thank you to those who have supported us with donations during this time, every contribution helps.”
