Residents come together to clean their neighbourhood

The residents plan to do the clean-up at least once every six months.

The Rynmore Safety in Numbers Community Project initiated a community clean-up project that took place on the morning of January 26.

Residents gathered at the site – located behind the Morehill mine dump – in Landau Street to clean up the area.

Community members cleared building rubble, vegetation that was out of control and domestic trash.

Deputy chairperson of the Rynmore Safety in Numbers Community Project, Doug Cresswell, said the project was started in August with the purpose of improving the safety and security of the about 180 residents in the Rynmore and Morehill areas.

“The project includes the areas from Landau Street, through Miles Sharp Street, down Van Rooyen Street and Morehill,” said Cresswell.

“Most residents in those areas are involved in initiatives that help protect the community.”

Cresswell said the reason for the clean-up is to try curb criminal activities that occur at the mine dump and it is an eyesore when the site gets overgrown with grass.

“The land is owned by an individual who has given us permission to clean it, monitor it and to act on his behalf against any trespassing on the land,” he said.

“This is the second clean-up we’ve initiated in the last two years but it’s the first time as the Rynmore Safety in Numbers Community Project.”

The residents plan to do the clean-up at least once every six months.

Tlhoriso Sepenyane, Rynmore Safety in Numbers Community Project committee member, said once the land is cleaned up they would like to create a recreational facility rather than having people using it for criminal activities.

“This community really cares. We don’t have sponsors yet but community members have donated towards the project. It is all about Ubuntu (humanity),” said Sepenyane.

“We appeal to local businesses in the area to get involved and be part of this initiative and any ideas from community members are welcome.”
