Murdered Benoni Northerns runner remembered as an academic who helped the needy

A case of murder was opened at the Crystal Park SAPS and the motive for the killing remains unknown.

The Nkoyane family is struggling to come to terms with the death of their father, Moss (Bra Moss), who was shot dead at the family home in Keimond Street, Crystal Park, on Monday (January 28) around 11am.

Nkoyane was a member of the Benoni Northerns Athletic Club and a retired chief director for the Department of Education (Johannesburg Cluster).

SAPS spokesperson Const Alex Mokete explained the events which led to the tragedy.

“It was reported that two men driving a grey sedan rang the intercom at the gate and the deceased’s daughter went to the gate to see who was there.

“The men told her they have a delivery for her father,” said Mokete.

“She went back inside the house and called her father and although he said he wasn’t expecting a delivery he went to the gate to investigate.

“As Nkoyane was walking towards the gate, one of the suspects reportedly pointed a gun at him.

“Nkoyane ran back towards the house and one of the suspects then jumped the gate and starting shooting at him,” Mokete said.

“He was overpowered at the kitchen door, which he tried to close, and shot in the head and leg.”

The suspects fled and when paramedics arrived they declared the 66-year-old father dead.

A case of murder was opened at the Crystal Park SAPS and the motive for the killing remains unknown.

Nkonyane’s daughter, Makhosazane, said the family is still in shock over the murder.

Nkonyane and his wife, Khethiwe, celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary in December.

“My mother is devastated.

“She did not only lose a husband but a best friend; they grow up together.

“It is a very difficult time for all of us,” said Makhosazane.

Makhosazane described her father as bubbly and sociable and a man with a great sense of humour.

He was a self-published author, a runner and an avid church goer.

“My dad was very disciplined and loved giving back to those in need.

“He would always find a way to make you laugh even if you were feeling down,” she said.

His published works were Managing Schools without Fear: The South African School Principal of the 21st century, Self-Made Teacher and The Essence of Principalship.

Nyokane was also a member of the Good News of Hope Ministries, in Chief Albert Luthuli.

Family friend and fellow Northerns Athletic Club member Khaya Mnyanda said Nkonyane was an academic.

“We ran the Johnson Crane Hire Marathon together on Sunday, January 27.

“I never thought this would be the last time I saw him,” said Mnyanda.

Nkoyane obtained a Senior Secondary Teacher’s Diploma and the Baccalaureus Educationis degree from the University of Zululand.

He further obtained a Bachelor of Education degree from Wits University, in Johannesburg.

He was also awarded a scholarship to study for a MA degree in Educational Administration and Curriculum in the United States in 1990.

In 2004, Nkonyane received an MBA from the Management College of Southern Africa.

Nkoyane is survived by his wife, Khethiwe, daughters Makhosazana and Thembeka, and his grandson, Sabelo.

A memorial service is being held today (January 31) at the Chief Albert Luthuli No. 2 Primary School, in Cloverdene.

His funeral will take place on February 2, at the school.
