SPCA hopeful to trap Bunny Park kitten

Anyone with information about how the kitten ended up in the Bunny Park should contact the SPCA on 011 894 2814.

A resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, informed the City Times on Monday about a black kitten she claims “a heartless individual” threw over the fence into the park over a month ago.

“The public is not allowed into the park, making it difficult for residents to try and rescue the cat,” she said in a letter to the editor.

“A friend who stays close to the Bunny Park noticed this poor little kitten and has attempted to get food to it through the thick fencing.

“It has no food or water and in view of the incredible electrical and windy storms we have had of late, this little kitten needs proper shelter and protection.

“She added the SPCA and other animal organisations were contacted and asked to rescue the kitten.

“It is a month later and the kitten has not been rescued but left to the mercy of the elements, cold, hungry and probably very scared.

“Have we all become uncaring, with no compassion or heart?

“This is not a wild cat, it will be a very loving pet to someone who cares. It just needs a proper chance,” the desperate resident stated.

“There is simply no excuse for this uncaring and heartless attitude towards a defenceless animal.

“We ask for the cooperation of the Bunny Park officials to allow the SPCA to enter the park and rescue the kitten – even if it has to be done after hours.”

Manager of the Benoni SPCA Vicky Finnermore said they are aware of the kitten and have been to the park to try to catch it a few times.

“We have been there after hours, but trying to catch the kitten has been difficult.

“It looks to be about six or seven months old and has been probably surviving on birds and whatever other food sources it can find in the Bunny Park,” Finnemore said.

“We will be setting up a cat trap this week and hope we can rescue it.”
