St Columba new Grade Ones ready for action

While it was back to school for most, for Grade One learners it was the start of a 12-year long journey.

Private education school learners got ready to commence their academic year on the morning of January 16, joining in a week later after their counterparts in public schools.

A tranquil atmosphere could be found at St Columba’s in the Benoni CBD as parents dropped off their little ones. While some were new to the school, many were familiar with their surroundings having been with the school since Grade R.

With 33 Grade One learners ready to take on a new chapter in their lives, parents entered classrooms with their children hand-in-hand, ensuring they had settled in before leaving them in the care of teachers and fellow learners.

“It was so exciting for me to take a walk around the school this morning and experience a magnetic vibe of children returning to school after a long six week holiday,” said St Columba’s principal, Bronwen Marcon.

“In particular, it was heartening to see our new Grade One children and their parents waiting eagerly outside the teachers’ classrooms.

“There was much joy and less apprehension as they started ‘big school’”.
