Feast your eyes on some of Benoni’s beautiful gardens soon

The first garden show was held in 1999, making this the 21st Beautiful Gardens of Benoni.

It’s that time of the year when the Rotary Anns of Benoni van Ryn host their annual Beautiful Gardens of Benoni event.

The event will take place on January 26 and 27.

Rotary Anns president Judy Bath said the event has grown and is now one of the most looked-forward-to event in the Benoni calendar.

“This project allows members of the public to enter private gardens they would otherwise not have access to, and to enjoy the variety of plantings and design,” said Bath.

“It is a community project whereby people from Benoni and surrounding towns have the opportunity to meet new people, talk gardens and rekindle old friendships around a table at our tea garden.”

Bath explained that through the years many local charities have benefitted from the funds raised.

“Over the years we have raised from R32 000 in our leanest year to R49 000 in our most successful year, she said.

“As the continued success of this project truly depends on the generosity of our Benoni garden owners, I would like to appeal to residents who have attractive gardens to contact me, or any of our club members, and give us the opportunity to show your garden.”

Bath said this will enable the Benoni van Ryn Rotary Anns to continue serving the needy, including the elderly, young, sick, homeless and animals.

She added that their tea garden is renowned, with visitors returning for their favourite cakes or quiches year after year.

These are the gardens which will be on show this year:

• Bob and Cecile Heynes: 215 Elston Avenue, Western Extension.

• Darryl Botes: 86 Wooton Avenue, Western Extension.

• Annie van Wyk: 17 Elliot Street, Rynfield.

• Tea garden: Keith and Michelle Rance, 7 Dobson Street, Rynfield.

• Bev Marnewick: 47 Sarel Cilliers Street, Rynfield.

• Laantie le Roux: 48 Milburn Street, Rynfield.

• Lyndon and Lucy: 4 Eva Road, Fairleads.

Tickets are available at any of the gardens at a cost of R30 and cover access to all the gardens.

On both days the gardens will be open between 10am and 4.30pm.
