Road users urged to be vigilant on Snake Road

The crimes were hours apart on the same road.

The Benoni CPF has urged road users to be vigilant on Snake Road following two attempted hijackings / robberies on January 11.

“The first attempt happened around 8am as the victim was approaching the N12 highway,” said CPF Sector One secretary, Kim Ferreira.

Ferreira said she spoke to the son of the victim who said his father stopped at the traffic light under the bridge when the suspect tapped on the window.

“The victim looked at the window and saw the suspect pointing a firearm at him – the suspect then told him to open the window,” Ferreira said.

Out of fear, the victim opened the window of his Land Rover to the demands of the suspect who wanted his phone.

“The victim said he could see another man standing behind his car,” she explained.

“At that moment, the traffic light changed to green and the victim was holding up the traffic so the suspect told him to leave.”

The victim described the suspects as tall.

The second attempt happened at around 1pm.

“This attempt was a white Hyundai bakkie, but the woman who notified us said the suspects were not tall at all,” Ferreira explained.

After a failed attempt, Ferreira said the three suspects ran into the bushes across the railway.

“The woman who told us about it said one suspect was wearing a red hat and another was wearing a beige top,” she said.

Ferreira said it is uncertain whether the suspects wanted to hijack the vehicles or steal items from the occupants.

She added that it does not appear as if there is a specific type of vehicle being targeted.
