Comfort, care and compassion for those with Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia, accounts for 60 to 80 per cent of dementia cases.

Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative brain disease that affects not only the person with dementia, but also the entire family, with the greatest responsibility placed on the caregiver.

According to nursing services manager at Methodist Homes Estelle du Toit, it is imperative to fully understand this disease as well as the specialist care it requires.

“Diagnosis, comprehension and management of the disease will go a long way in improving the quality of life of the person living with the disease, as well as their family and loved ones,” explained du Toit.

In South Africa alone, there are an estimated 750 000 people living with Alzheimer’s. The exact cause of this disease is yet to be established.

Methodist Homes successfully manages 15 retirement villages in Gauteng (12) and the North West (3).

“Nine villages offer mid and frail care services with qualified nursing staff and highly trained care workers who offer much-needed support and care to our frail residents,” notes du Toit.

“Four of our homes have fully equipped Alzheimer’s wings within their care centres, offering care for those living with moderate to severe Alzheimer’s.

“Prim Villa, situated on the East Rand, is fully dedicated to residents living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.”

“We at Methodist Homes understand and are fully aware of the ever-growing need for formal social care systems in South Africa.

“It is imperative that these people and their families receive only the best treatment, love, care and support.”

While the disease is irreversible, medicine and correct care can help to slow down progress, keeping people more comfortable and helping to maintain their dignity.

“It is alarming that due to lack of finances and welfare benefits, combined with a shortage of formal social care facilities, the majority of our population do not have access to this specialist care, so the disease sadly remains largely undiagnosed and consequently untreated.

“Methodist Homes remain passionate and committed to offering professional, specialist care to Alzheimer’s residents, as well as to support their families.”
