EMPD clamps down on speedsters

All drivers were charged at Benoni Police Station with reckless and negligent driving and are scheduled to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court soon.

High speeds were firmly on the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department’s (EMPD) radar over the festive season with several speedsters arrested during ongoing operations, and many offering colourful excuses for their criminal behaviour.

The EMPD High-Speed Unit arrested four drivers on December 21 for exceeding the speed limit on Kingsway Road between N12 turn off and Modderbee Road, which has an 80kmp/h, speed limit as well as on Princess Avenue between Russel and Harrison streets, which is a 60kmp/h zone.

On Kingsway Road two male motorists in BMW sedans, aged 27 and 50, respectively, caught doing 124kmp/h and 118kmp/h respectively, were arrested citing their reasons for speeding as rushing to Limpopo Province and rushing to work.

On Princess Avenue, two male drivers, aged 25 and 29, one in a Ford sedan and the other in a BMW sedan, were arrested when clocked at 102kmp/h and 101kmp/h.

In addition, 16 drivers received fines when caught via a hand-held laser speed reader for disregarding the speed limit, three for disregarding traffic signals and one for not fastening a seatbelt.

On December 22 between 5am and 6am, three drivers ended up behind bars when caught doing speeds of 127kmp/h, 116kmp/h and 111kmp/h on a 70kmp/h zone on Main Reef Road between Industry Road and Beryl Street, Benoni.

A 30-year-old male driver in a BMW sedan was caught doing 127kmp/h at 5.25am. At 6.01am, a 47-year-old male driver in an Audi sedan was stopped when registering 116kmp/h.

The third arrested speedster was a 41-year-old male taxi driver in a Toyota minibus caught doing 111kmp/h.

On December 23, the EMPD High-Speed Unit conducted speed operations on the N12 between the Main Road bridge and the Bunyan Street turnoff where four speedsters were arrested for clocking speeds well beyond the 120kmp/h speed limit.

At 8.40am a 30-year-old male driver in a McLaren was caught doing 194kmp/h, claiming he was late for an appointment at a hospital.

The 63-year-old driver of a Porsche was apprehended just after 9am clocking 176kmp/h and offered no reason for this to officers.

Two more drivers were arrested when caught doing 171kmp/h and 169kmp/h. One was on a Kawasaki motorcycle and the other in a Ford sedan.
