[WATCH] IEB matrics jubilant at St Dunstan’s

After the release of the IEB results, schools under the GDE will receive their results tomorrow.

“St Dunstan’s College is both proud and pleased to have maintained its 100 per cent pass rate for the 2018 National Senior Certificate Independent Board Examinations (IEB),” were the words of the college rector Michael McConnachie.

This comes after matrics around the country, under the IEB, received their final results in the early hours of this morning.

“Almost 90 per cent of the candidates achieved a bachelors degree pass and a number of students achieved outstanding results,” said McConnachie, adding that some of the students recorded their best results in their high school careers.

Shining in the limelight from the college were Franchesca de Moura and Hannah Keet who each achieved eight distinctions with Tasmin Schwar achieving distinctions in all seven of the subjects she wrote.

In addition, the following students achieved results in the top one per cent of candidates per subject in the country:

• Franchesca de Moura (English, consumer studies, and mathematics).

• Tasmin Schwar (Afrikaans and consumer studies).

• Hannah Keet and Amy Visser (English).

• Lance Dethian and Enrique Pereira (mathematics).

Students were enthralled with their results.

Dethian, who will be pursuing a BSc degree in Geoscience at the University of Pretoria this year, said he was “very happy and very excited with the results”.

Georgia Hatzilias, who was at the college this morning, said awaiting the results was a scary experience.

“I was pleasantly surprised with my results,” she said about her five distinctions in Afrikaans, business studies, English, geography and mathematics.

“I’m a little bit speechless right now – this was by far the biggest shock of my life.”

Another learner, Dylan Rees, described the waiting period as nerve-racking.

“A group of friends all gathered last night so we could receive the results together,” said an excited Rees.

“I’m so relieved with the results but it was definitely a heart-dropping moment when we waited for them.”

Learner Andrew Knell said he felt relaxed after receiving his results and said he was overjoyed knowing he was going to school one last time to fetch his final report.

Joining in on the celebrations at the college was learner Lerato Moreki.

“The shocking feeling at the time of getting the results all the while trying to stay relaxed is a feeling I won’t forget,” said Moreki, who plans to study psychology.

McConnachie maintained that while the college lauded its students, they were cognisant of the fact that schools need to be more than simply churning out results, and took the opportunity to wish students around Benoni well on their success.

“St Dunstan’s College needs to maintain its reputation as a school which challenges its students and teachers, and has to ensure that the soft skills (which are not examined) remain as important as the knowledge acquired.

“Our congratulations to all the matrics in Benoni who were successful in either the public or independent school examinations and our very best wishes to them as they embark on the next phase of their life journeys.”
