Afrikaans authors come alive

Local authors claim prizes in the country's capital

Susanna Moolman, a Rynfield resident, and Isak Stephanus Uys, of Marister small holdings, were both winners at the “ink-Skryf in Afrikaans” gala event in Pretoria recently.

Susanna won the prize for her second book, Guppy en anderste stories.

The book is written in Afrikaans and consists of 33 short stories about the hilarious life experiences she shares with her Labrador/German shepherd, Guppy (9).

“Groep 7 Drukkers and Uitgewers sponsored the prize which consisted of 50 printed copies of my book,” she said.

She is a dress designer by profession. In her free time, she enjoys reading, watching movies and mostly, spending time with her beloved Guppy.

Susanna is a mother, wife and grandmother.

“My book is ideal for adults who believe in the saying ‘a laugh a day keeps the stress away,’” she said.

Susanna plans to rewrite her first book whose next edition will be complete in a few months.

Stephanus won the best story of the year category for his work entitled Die EKG featuring Koos in die Kruger Wildtuin.

The book is a compilation of 30 Afrikaans short stories with hilarious life sketches that will leave you in stitches.

He is a pastor in the Apostolic Faith Mission Church, Northmead, and lives with his three children, three dogs and his wife he fondly calls “Liefie”, and whose name is mentioned several times in the book.

Stephanus said most of the stories are loosely based on his life’s experiences.

He is not new to the writing scene, already having two other books under his belt, The Sparrow, a fictional book set on the backdrop of the gospel, and Wag-‘n-Bietjie Woorde, a compilation of 110 mostly Afrikaans poems. It is a must-read for poetry lovers.
