UPDATE: Metro inspecting partial dam wall collapse in the Benoni CBD

Rudolph explained that there is no flooding expected and, apart from the slab caving in, there is no wall breakage.

No further damage is expected for the retainer wall of the lake in the Benoni CBD on the corner of Bunyan Street and the N12 onramp after a slab collapsed leading to an overflow of water into the wall.

This is according to Disaster Emergency Management Services senior district manager Pieter Rudolph who said the situation is now under control.

Rudolph explained that the slab fell in when the ground beneath it washed away.

Using the interlink of the lake that runs alongside the N12 and channels through to the lake next to Tom Jones Street, water that was flowing into the sunken wall was diverted to avoid an overflow, allowing for repairs to follow soon.

“The water that was flowing into the retainer wall after a slab broke away is being diverted from the affected area with the use of sandbags,” explained Rudolph.

“Using the interlink we have managed to channel the water flow to the sides of the ramp to flow into the lake area next to Tom Jones Street.”

“We are awaiting the civil engineers on site as they will be able to assess the damage and find a solution to fixing the slab,” he said.

“We would like to reiterate to the public that the roads department is in control of the situation and the slab will be repaired in due course.”
