Rev Bill retires for a second time

The congregation wishes and prays that his “second” retirement will be a long and fruitful one.

The eMseni Methodist Church in Brentwood Park bade farewell to their founding minister, Rev Bill Meaker, with a celebration on December 8.

Bill retired officially from the church ministry some years ago and found himself with time on his hands.

At that time the Methodist church was establishing a conference centre in Brentwood Park by the name of eMseni, which is a Zulu word meaning “Place of Grace”. During the development of the conference centre, it occurred to the developing committee that this was a wonderful opportunity to establish a new congregation in the Brentwood Park area. Bill offered to do the work of establishing this new congregation, and the eMseni Methodist Church was born in 2007.

Bill was a long-serving minister of the Northfield Methodist Church in Benoni and has been in the Benoni area for many years. He also served the Methodist church as the Bishop of the Highveld and Swaziland District in addition to serving as Bishop of the Northern Free State and Lesotho District.

Bill has served the Methodist church actively for 47 years, and has decided that enough is enough.

A reverend at heart, Bill is an accomplished musician, author of many teaching and Bible study aids, an administrator, friend and confidant to countless congregants and colleagues over the years.

Bill is an avid golfer and will be found on the first tee of Benoni Country Club every Monday morning. There is no doubt he will be on the golf course more frequently in the future.

Farewell Baba Bill, may the golfing gods smile on you.
