Cleaning up Korsman

Black bags were supplied and gloves were lent out to ensure volunteers had adequate gear and resources available to them.

Volunteers of the Korsman Bird Sanctuary, together with eco-friendly enthusiastic members of the public, gathered on November 18 for a litter clean-up in the sanctuary based in Westdene.

Chairperson of the Korsman Conservancy, Jane Trembath, highlighted some of the challenges facing the sanctuary.

“Apart from the litter thrown over the fence, there is a lot that washes down from the entire catchment area, including massive amounts from Western Extension and the railway line at Victoria Street,” explained Trembath.

“We pick up lots of plastic bottles, inside and outside.

“Outside we pick up many cigarette packets and fast food wrappings and I challenge big food chains to compete as to how many new litter bins each can sponsor.

“The danger of plastic to birds is that it can get wrapped around their legs or stuck in their beaks so they can’t feed.

“I once found a dead baby bird in a nest whose leg was caught in the thin tape the parent had built into the nest.

“Inside the sanctuary we found plenty of weird things and in this pick-up we found plenty of single shoes and even a pair of swimming flippers, minus the diver though.”

Trembath said the litter pick-up crew met twice a year to do a thorough clean-up but volunteers who want to set up other dates are welcome to set a date with her.

Sunday saw a record 35 individuals at the start of the clean-up ranging from children to seniors join forces to provide a cleaner environment for the sanctuary’s inhabitants.
