Reservoir projects to boost water storage

An additional 35 reservoirs and ten towers will be constructed over the next three years.

A 5.5 megalitre water tower being built in Hospital Road, Northmead, is 35 per cent complete.

The project, set to boost the water storage capacity for the high-lying areas in Northmead, is expected to reach full completion in early 2020.

Construction started in May. Ekurhuleni metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe said the Northmead tower is one of six reservoirs and two towers being added to their 72 reservoirs and 30 water towers.

Each reservoir, once completed, will be connected directly to the existing water transmission system, which allows the bulk storage to be held in close proximity to where demand has been identified.

“With the significant increase in the demand for water in Ekurhuleni, the first-of-its-kind mega reservoir project is aimed at ensuring that in the event of water supply being interrupted each reservoir will still have enough water stored to supply customers with Blue Drop quality water for up to 48 hours,” Gadebe said.

Other reservoir construction sites are in Bredell, Kempton Park, Benoni CBD, Etwatwa, Welgedacht and Zulu Xhosa.

The MMC for Water, Sanitation and Energy councillor Tiisetso Nketle reiterated that while the metro is geared up to play its part in conserving water, residents need to contribute by using water sparingly.

“There is a need for the community to adopt behavioural changes with regard to water, including refraining from irrigation activities between 7am and 5pm, using a bucket to wash cars and attending to leaks,” she said.
