The Paul Rotherham Lego story

According to Paul, Set 928 has gone on to become one of the most iconic Lego sets ever made and so, in celebration of next year's 40th anniversary of the release of Set 928, he decided to make his own version ... Just bigger at four times the size.

You may know him as the face and soul of Caxton Radio, or for his on-air work in previous years at 947 and Jacaranda FM but what you may not know is Paul Rotherham is a Lego crazed builder in a league of his own.

After arriving in the country in the ’80s, a nine-year-old Paul entered a Lego building competition and has not looked back on one of his thriving passions ever since.

“Somehow I won the competition and my prize was Set 928, The Galaxy Explorer,” said a reminiscent Paul.

“Released in 1979, this was one of the coolest Lego sets around and every boy wanted one.

“The Galaxy Explorer triggered my passion for Lego and it remains one of my favourite sets to this day.”

“After months of waiting for many overseas BrickLink orders to arrive and after hours and hours of building, I finally got to exhibit my four times scale Lego Galaxy Explorer at Brickfair 2018.

“This has been my most ambitious Lego build to date and one that I’m extremely proud of.

“I built this with no digital plans and no instructions but it did involve plenty of patience, heaps of experimenting, many late nights and a good few kilograms of Lego bricks.”

Paul Rotherham’s Lego engineered Galaxy Explorer.

Paul extended a special thanks to Phil Fenn from #Brickgeekz who he says went out of their way to help him secure some very difficult to find Lego parts.

Included in his vote of thanks, Paul mentioned a special thanks to Lego certified stores for selling him a “whole load of bricks” and said was delighted at the prospect of having a “proper Lego store here in South Africa”.

“Many people find it odd that people of my age “play” with Lego.

“We’re known as AFOLs – Adult Fans Of Lego.

“Truth is, Lego may be a plastic toy designed for children but it’s also an art form, a way of expressing ourselves with the only limit being our imagination.

“Sometimes it really feels good to be a kid again, so here’s to Set 928,” concluded an excited Paul.
