Suspect killed, two escape in botched Putfontein hijacking

One suspect shot dead, one arrested and two evade arrest for attempted hijacking.

A suspect was killed during a botched attempted hijacking by EMPD officers on the N12 East Putfontein onramp yesterday (November 14).

“The incident took place at around 9.40am,” said EMPD spokesperson chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago.

“Two vehicles boxed in a Toyota Quantum and their occupants pointed firearms at the driver in an attempt to hijack his vehicle.

“The victim was made to lie on the floor of the car,” Kgasago explained.

“A patrolling EMPD freeway vehicle was in the vicinity and sensed something suspicious.

“On approaching the vehicles, the suspects opened fire on the officers.

“The officers returned fire, killing one suspect and arresting another.

“The suspects were driving a Toyota Corolla and a Nissan NP200.

“Two suspects in the NP200 sped off and one suspect abandoned the Corolla and escaped on foot.

“The fatally wounded suspect was shot in both legs and could not be saved by paramedics, probably due to a loss of blood.

“The abandoned Toyota Corolla was towed to the SAPS Van Ryn Deep Pound.

“In-depth investigations are underway to round up the suspects who are still at large,” said Kgasago.
